A Japanese inspired BBQ sauce that comes together in under 5 minutes. No chopping, no simmering. Just mix the ingredients, let it rest for a bit, and it’s ready to go!

Japanese Inspired BBQ Sauce

  • 1 1/4 cup dark brown sugar

  • 1 cup ketchup

  • 1/4 cup soy sauce

  • 2 tbsp. rice vinegar

  • 1 tbsp. toasted sesame oil

  • 1 tsp. ground ginger

  • 1 tsp. fine sea salt


  • Place all of the ingredients in a large measuring cup and whisk to combine. Pour into a jar, cover, and place in the fridge for at least 4 hours before using to allow the flavors to meld.

  • While you don’t need to let this BBQ sauce rest in the fridge, it does allow the flavors to become one and become much more delicious. I highly recommend making it at least 4 hours before you plan to use it.
  • Make sure you get toasted sesame seed oil and not plain sesame seed oil. Toasted sesame seed oil is darker and has a nutty flavor while plain sesame seed oil has a neutral flavor.
  • Use this BBQ sauce on your next grilling day, add it to a burger, use it as a dip for grilled (or fried) chicken tenders, eat it out of the jar with a spoon… well, maybe not the last one, but you get my point. This BBQ sauce is delicious. Try it with everything.
